LANCER LAUNCH
We had our first annual Lancer Launch event on Friday, August 23 for all incoming sixth graders. The program was entirely student led. Over 40 rising 7th and 8th graders met with select faculty during the summer to plan and prepare for the program. Student leaders led breakout groups and shared their knowledge and experiences with the rising sixth graders. Sixth graders made new friends, met their homeroom teachers, opened their lockers, ate lunch in the school cafeteria, and engaged in some team building exercises facilitated by Challenge Works staff. Students also had opportunities to purchase school supplies and PE uniforms. At the end of the day, parents attended a question and answer forum with administration and guidance. It was a great way to ease middle school transition anxiety for students and parents. |

Self-Regulation Parent Workshop
Gifted Programs is presenting a parent workshop on self-regulation on
Saturday, April 26 (a snow make-up day) from 12:30 till 2:00 at the
Virginia Beach Higher Education Center. A complementary website is being developed that will be released prior to the workshop itself. Seating
is limited so parents who wish to attend should register for the workshop by going to: http://www.cvent.com/d/94q2tb.
Self-regulation is one of the keys to accomplishment. To be successful, students must learn skills such as organizing their time and materials, persisting in their efforts, monitoring the quality of their work, keeping their emotions in check, and controlling their behavior. At times, parents find that helping their children develop these skills becomes a daunting and frustrating task. The focus of this workshop will be providing tools to parents which they can use to help their children develop good self-regulation skills.
